Annie Pootoogook RIP

Annie Pootoogook was an Inuk-Canadian artist who recently passed away under mysterious circumstances. Her drawings documented life in Cape Dorset—a remote town off the southern coast of Baffin Island in Northern Canada. Her work had an ‘illustration as visual journalism’ quality and had been exhibited at the Power Plant Art Gallery in Toronto. In this documentary she talks about her work and identity as an artist.

CBC reports: “An Ottawa police unit that normally investigates confirmed homicides is looking into “suspicious elements” of Inuk artist Annie Pootoogook’s death. The body of the 47-year-old artist was found just before 9 a.m. ET on Monday, Sept. 19, (2016) by a city worker in the Rideau River.” They have not released cause of death. Rest in Peace Annie.
